In the time of past generations, the role of cloth & garment was more prominent, more personal, more part of everyday life than what is commonly known today. Textiles embodied the social values & customs of their times: opulent laces & richly woven fabrics displaying wealth & prestige; fabrics of intricate detail & symbolic design for dowries, births, & deaths; richly hand embroidered & woven textiles for household adornment. In innumerable countries skilled craftspeople, coming from diverse social & financial circumstances, created textiles that were a valued & essential part of everyday life. From detailed colourful batik to costumes embellished with gold thread, mirror, or coin; from hand-painted/dyed lengths of cloth to intricately woven wall & bed-coverings - all bearing the imprint of their makers' imagination & skill. Textiles Through Time serves as a link between generations & cultures of past & present times, to inspire & intrigue those who come with the textile treasures of those who came before us. Though your hands many never know the touch of these pieces, may your head, heart & hands combine with the spirit of these textiles, & take shape when you create some treasure of your own.........
Textiles are classified according to their component fibers into natural fiber textiles or man-made fiber textiles (Synthetic Textiles). The natural fibers may be further classed according to origin as animal, vegetable, or inorganic fibers. Natural fiber like silk, wool, linen, cotton, & synthetic fibers such as rayon, nylon, & polyesters, & some inorganic fibers, such as cloth of gold, glass fiber, & asbestos cloth. Textiles are classified as to their structure or weave, according to the manner in which warp & weft cross each other. Quality in textiles depends on several factors, such as the character of the yarn spun from the fibers, whether clean, smooth, fine, or coarse & whether hard, soft, or medium twisted. Density of weave & finishing processes are also important elements in determining the quality of fabrics.
